I think this is stupid. It would make more sense to tell drivers to slow down to something like 80km/h rather than telling them they're so and so seconds/milliseconds ahead or behind. Sure that means someone can still gain an advantage with good lines, but that's good for entertainment. I'm new to F1 and apparently safety cars last 2-4 laps, so that would just be close to 10 minutes of wasted time. Like they might as well cut to commercial then since they're so deadset on making sure nothing is happening.

The "conveyor belt" covering on tire walls may spread the loading further, but when damaged, expect 2-3x the time to put them back into shape. Those things are heavy. It takes at least 6 guys to manhandle the things and another person resetting all the screws that hold it in place. For a large pro event, you have plenty of people. For amateur racing you do not. The time to get more people out onto the track can result in losing a whole race session.

How about a time trial. Set the cars off in reverse order of qualifying at 2 second intervals. If any car gets within one tenth of the car in front then the front car is required to allow the faster car past at a recognised point in the next sector. Both cars then have a 3 lap period where their gap to the next car is not measured, before the usual one tenth gap triggers an overtake. At the end of the race the net number of places gained/lost is used for scoring. For each driver the challenge will be to catch the car in front before being caught by the car behind. The crowd miss out on seeing a mass start, but should be able to see one car closing the gap on another. In addition you know who is winning at all stages of the race because the gain in places is easy to measure. One issue is that there is likely to be a tie for some positions because more than one car may gain the same number of places. In this case there is a tie break of fastest lap during the race.

What if the teams didn't have to lock in to one, sort of ever-evolving, vehicle? What if the car they bring was their Monaco car? Blows the budget, sure? But that's what used to make F1 interesting (in the CanAm/Group B spirit of insane engineering and expense).

The simplest solution is to change the rules to make the cars smaller but that isn't really feasable considering the safety elements built into the car along with the hybrid engines. One solution would be to force all drivers to use every compound of tyre in race conditions, in so ensuring all drivers have to pit at least three times (the starting tyre compound wouldn't count) considering most overtakes are done in the pits at Monaco. having a minimum of three pit stops brings in the same dynamic as the joker lap - driver coudl take a pit stop and change tyres to create a bit of space to try for an undercut from the driver in front. For the 3 stop minimum to work, they would also need to prevent drivers from pitting under safety car and also changing tyres under red flag conditions (in my scenmario, teams could change tyres but they would count towards the pit stop minimum) as this years race was awful as alll drivers changed the tyres under red flag conditions and continued to the end in starting order. Even just preventing drivers from pitting under safety car or changing tyres under red flag conditions would help with entertainment levels - I fell asleep watching this years race as it was so boring after the first lap crashes just watching the cars go around the track in the same order as they started.

I actually really like the Joker idea. We can all say we want smaller cars like 20 years ago. And I agree it would be brilliant. But I’m seriously doubting that’ll happen anytime soon. Something like a Joker lane multiple times a race would throw huge curveballs at the strategists.
